Lia’s Vineyard is in the Chahalem Mountains AVA in Oregon’s
Willamette Valley. The elevation ranges from 380 to 560 feet and the
aspect is primarily due south. The soils are mostly jory, a dark
reddish brown silty clay loam. We believe the soils combined with the
climate are what lend our grapes their unique character.
The vineyard has 25 acres of pinot noir planted to eight clones -
Wädenswil,
Pommard, 114, 115, 667, 777, 828, and Mariafeld (aka UCD23), as well as
a bit over two acres of Chardonnay (Wente Selection). The Pommard,
Wädenswil and Chardonnay are all
own-rooted with plantings from 1990 to 1993. The newer plantings
(1999-2002) are all on 101-14 rootstock. Spacing is 5x9 with VSP
trellising. The most recent plantings (2009) are 3x7 and 4x7 on RG,
101-14, and SO4 rootstocks. The vines aren’t irrigated - we hold
that dry farming tends
to produce more balanced vines and better fruit.
We rely on our talented vineyard manager, Javier Marin, to help
us
grow outstanding fruit. Javier has more than 20 years experiece
in viticulture in the Willamette Valley and was previously vineyard
manger at the highly regarded Shea Vineyard
in
the Yamhill-Carlton
District. Javier's experience and meticulous attention to detail
mean that the vines produce the best fruit possible.
